Because mankind as a whole need the testing. Ofcause this means that some get very little testing (ie small children dying) and some get a much harder time that others. That's the way the world works. They need to understand why they are to obey God eternally.

Does the NIV live up to that requirement? Anyway I guess the NWT has done harm to JW. Russell didnt need it. Rutherford didnt need. Other sectpeople like Christadelphian's Thomas and Blake didnt need it.

here's a 2 small examples.. 2 peter 2:9 - if this is so, then the lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.(niv).
2 peter 2:9 - then the lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, (rsv).

Any suggestions on a Bible and a Bible commentary?
by DB ini currently use the new world translation of the holy scriptures, and it seems to be a pretty good bible.
but i am looking for a good, modern-english version with which to do some comparison reading.
plus, i am looking for a good bible commentary for research.

Skeptic, great post.
The NIV is horible. It's manipulated towards hell and no millenium reign doctrines. It's should be burned.
I love the ASV. It uses Gods name in the OT too. The RSV is great too. Jerusalem Bible is great too but not handy.

However I may disagree with WTS, it never stops to amaze me how protestants, and thereby enemies of the true biblical teachings, or frustrated exJWs never seizes to attack JW because of timecalculations that didnt come true. They did it because they felt they were able to make sense out of OT prophecies protestants hardly ever read.

These souls in Rev 6:9-11 are saints that are to receive angelic nature and they are told to wait until God decides to interfere on earth. Could this is just symbolising they dead people put on hold. Surely the OT nor the NT teaches of souls living on after death.

'As opposed to what, the "no soul" teaching of the JW's? Wanna see an immortal soul, see Samuel's spirit pulled from the netherworld, see Moses and Elijah on Mt Tabor with Christ, see that God is a God of the living, not of the dead.'
1. Samuel's spirit???!! Are you talking about the which of Endor? I puzzled that anyone could posible believe that was not a demon. Samuel was sleeping in Sheol. If we assume the soul is immortal which it isn't, Would Samuel (in netherworld paradise I assume, Jewish myth doctrine) go against the Lords wishes? How come Moses was told to kill sorcerers?
2. Moses and Elijah, did they talk to the disciples? No, it was a vision to strengeth the disciples and a way of Jesus to show his power and his approval by God.
3. God is not the God of the living, but of the death because they are all alive to him. Know Psalms 6:5? David must have been misinformed. The resurrection promised by the prophets that David talked of too, would be pointless. No this mean that God remembers all in Sheol, one day he will resurrect them, bring them up from Sheol.
How do Jews deal with the fact that 'nephesh' means creation? That animals are spoken of as 'nephesh' in the OT too?
